Tech Superpowers, Inc.

Tech Superpowers, Inc. is the company behind NewburyOpen.net.

A traditional service-based IT consulting company and Apple Macintosh Reseller, our location on Newbury Street served as the perfect place to start NewburyOpen.net. Our early experience with the Apple Airport, one of the first low-cost consumer 802.11b systems, combined with a creative technical team, led to the conclusion that WiFi networks are better provided for free by a corporate sponsor, rather than commercialized by a traditional for-pay WISP (Wireless ISP).

Founded in 1992, Tech Superpowers, Inc. today continues to supply creative individuals, small companies, and enterprise with Apple Macintosh and cross-platform services and products. The company now employs 11 people and has revenues in excess of $1.5 million.

Bluesocket

Bluesocket is one of the foremost manufacturers of systems to control and secure wireless networks, and their technology helps to secure WiFi networks all over the world. Some of their local installations include the Boston Public Library system and Harvard University.

Starting in 2003, NewburyOpen.net is also a proud client as well, thanks to a generous donation by BlueSocket of one of their WG-series wireless gateways. The WG-series provides single-point firewall, VPN, and monitoring for the NewburyOpen.net network. Even though we do not restrict people from logging onto our network, security is a big deal. The BlueSocket gateway allows us to regulate what type of traffic is allowed on NewburyOpen.net, monitor traffic loads and usage, as well as allow for enhanced services, like VPN support.

Their hardware and administrative software, run over a secure web browser, allows us to have easy access and control over the network - and combined with our unique architecture, allows us to control all of the dozens of nodes on NewburyOpen.net through one simple gateway.

Our thanks go to BlueSocket for recognizing the potential of free public WiFi networks:

"This collaboration between NewburyOpen.net and Bluesocket is a microcosm of a massive movement toward secure anytime, anywhere wireless computing,” said Eric Janszen, CEO of BlueSocket.
