Post Office Square, Boston, MA

Current Status: Initial Assessment Proposal Approved, Site Assessment Next

Update: Tech Superpowers, Inc., along with two other firms was approved for the Phase 1 site assessment.

In February, 2004, an RFP was released by the Friends of Post Office Square to provide WiFI in the Norman Leventhal Park in Post Office Square, in the heart of the financial district.

Tech Superpowers, Inc. - creators of NewburyOpen.net - has submitted the initial proposal for the assessment of the park physical layout for WiFi.

One key part of the Post Office Square project is that the organization that released the RFP, known as FOPOS, does not want the WiFi network to charge money, nor provide exposure to a commercial entity. They want the network to be invisible, but always available for the people that spend time in the park.

We feel that this concept of the ubiquitous but unobtrusive Internet fits very well with NewburyOpen.net's community concepts. Although NewburyOpen.net is commercially sponsored, users are aware of the network only through subtle signage and posters at each location. They are not forced to see login screens or logos when they go on the network, so the marketing is much less "in your face" than other commercial networks.

We've offered to do the assessment of the park, including the report detailing costs, timelines, and associated testing at no cost. Why? We feel that a simple feasibility study to get WiFi going in the public spaces of Boston is valuable for everyone - and it should be done by a community organization like ours, rather than a commercial interest.

If we do get approval to go ahead with the assessment, we will post our Proposal for Phase One of the project once the due date of the proposal passes.
